Navistar International’s roots go all the way back to 1831 when Virginia farmer Cyrus McCormick invented the reaper to make harvesting more efficient. His McCormick Harvesting Machine Company would go on to merge with Deering Harvester Company, which years prior worked on gas engines, along with several other businesses to become the International Harvester Company in 1902.

In 1904, International Harvester acquired the Weber Wagon Company, and soon put all of its mergers and acquisitions to work by manufacturing the “Auto Buggy” in 1907 followed by the “Auto Wagon” in 1909. Although those initial vehicles were designed primarily for use in agriculture, it didn’t take long for those vehicles to expand to delivery and other general haulage applications. Many decades later in 1986 when Navistar acquired International Harvester, the company established the International brand of trucks.

    Key Models

You can trace the origins of International’s dump trucks back to 1924 with the release of the 54, 74, 94, and 104 models, which many customers used as dump trucks. Some of these worked on major construction projects, such as the Hoover Dam. The company also built the first tandem-axle, six-wheel truck in 1934.

Other notable medium-, heavy-, and severe-duty vehicles released over the coming decades included the D-Series in 1937, V-Line in 1956, Loadstar in 1962, PayStar in 1972, S-Series in 1977, DuraStar (previously 4000 Series) in 2001, WorkStar in 2008, HX Series in 2016, HV Series in 2017, and MV Series in 2018.

Today, International’s lineup of dump trucks primarily consists of the severe-duty HV Series, HX Series, and WorkStar, as well as the medium-duty DuraStar. The HX Series is available solely in a day cab configuration, but the other three truck lines have options for day cabs, extended cabs, and crew cabs.
