FCA Building Connected Vehicle Ecosystem With Google & HARMAN Technologies
Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) is working with Google and Samsung subsidiary HARMAN to build a global ecosystem of connected vehicle technologies accessible to vehicle owners in more than 150 countries. The onboard Uconnect system will be available for millions of FCA vehicles and run on the Android operating system from Google, and it will deliver services to vehicle owners using a “new cloud-based platform from HARMAN,” says FCA. The company plans to launch the new offering later in 2019 and adds that it “will be featured on all new FCA vehicles worldwide by 2022.”
“By selecting industry leaders such as Samsung and Google, we are making an efficient and responsible utilization of capital to provide advanced technological solutions to our customers worldwide,” says Harald Wester, chief technical officer of FCA. “In collaboration with HARMAN - Samsung and Google, we have developed a flexible, easy-to-use and connected ‘ecosystem’ that not only deploys today’s technology, but is also ready to integrate upcoming innovations.”
Connected Vehicle Services
FCA’s new system will offer a wide range of services covering vehicle maintenance, safety, driver behavior, entertainment, and navigation. Some examples include vehicle health reports that can predict when a vehicle will need maintenance or repair, a smart navigation system that locates fuel and charging stations, and access to “live customer-care assistance at the push of a button,” FCA says. Other features include remote battery management for electric vehicles, usage-based vehicle insurance, rental and car sharing services, and much more.
Vehicles in the ecosystem also have access to over-the-air updates to ensure they always have access to the newest features, and service providers can push out OTA updates to the Android-powered onboard system to add new apps and features. With support for 4G now and 5G in the future, vehicles will also be compatible with smart cities and other Internet of Things initiatives.
