Volvo Introduces New Driver Display Activation For Initiating Software Updates & Parameter Changes On The Fly
At the American Trucking Associations’ Technology & Maintenance Council annual meeting taking place through the end of the day today in Atlanta, Volvo unveiled its new Remote Programming Driver Display Activation service, which will launch in the fourth quarter of 2020.
“With the introduction of Volvo Trucks’ new Driver Display Activation, the process time for software and parameter updates has been improved by an average of 50%,” says Ash Makki, product marketing manager at Volvo Trucks North America. “Now, from customer initiation to completion, an update can be done in less time than a driver typically takes for a break or fill up.”
How It Works
With this new service and a reliable cellular network connection, drivers receive a notification whenever an update is ready, which they can then initiate from the instrument cluster during scheduled stops and breaks, leading to reduced downtime. These updates pertain to engines, transmissions, and aftertreatment systems. Although initiated by the driver, members of Volvo Action Services will still track the process to ensure the update installed correctly.
This service also allows drivers and fleet managers to adjust parameters remotely in response to changing operating environments. This includes setting a maximum road speed or cruise speed limit, optimizing gear shifting based on the type of load, setting an idle shutdown time, and much more. New Volvo trucks come standard with the Driver Display Activation features for two years as part of an initial subscription to Volvo Trucks’ Remote Diagnostics services.
Added Value
“There’s a direct connection between keeping a truck updated with the latest software and reducing fault codes, in addition to the truck running more efficiently, improving the environmental footprint and reducing operational costs,” says Conal Deedy, director of commercial telematics solutions for Volvo Trucks North America. “There’s a lot of value in each update and the convenience of Driver Display Activation will allow these updates to be done with minimal disruption to operations.”
