Kenworth Launches Electric Vehicle Technician Training Program
Kenworth recently launched a comprehensive EV technician training and certification program to prepare Kenworth dealerships in the United States and Canada to service electric vehicles. For initial EV certification, Kenworth technicians need to successfully complete a seven-course curriculum on service systems, electrical principles, electrical systems, electrical systems II, cab and chassis electronics, electric vehicles systems, and advanced electric diagnostics. Courses run two to four days in length and combine classroom and virtual training.
“It’s vitally important to support Kenworth’s ‘Driving To Zero Emissions’ endeavor to bring battery-electric vehicles into the marketplace by ensuring that we help provide in-depth training and a certification path for service technicians at Kenworth dealerships,” says Jim Walenczak, Kenworth assistant general manager for sales and marketing.
About Kenworth Electric Vehicles
Kenworth’s line of battery-electric vehicles includes the Class 8 T680E, the Class 7 K370E, and the Class 6 K270E. The company is also working on a fuel cell electric vehicle model of the T680 which will be powered by hydrogen as part of a demonstration test project in Southern California.
The T680E is a day cab truck available either as a 6x4-axle tractor or straight truck. It has a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 82,000 pounds (37,194 kilograms) and produces 536 continuous horsepower (400 kilowatts) and up to 670 peak HP (500 kW). The zero-emission truck has an estimated operating range of 150 miles (241 kilometers) and a top speed of 70 mph (112 km/h). Operators can fully charge the T680E through its industry-standard SAE CCS1 charge port in approximately three hours.
The K270E and K370E battery-electric vehicles have direct-drive motors with 355 and 469 HP (265 and 350 kW), respectively. They are available with a high-density 141-kWh battery pack with a 100-mi (160-km) range or a 282-kWh with a 200-mi (322-km) range. Both trucks use a DC fast-charging system that can recharge in as little as an hour, as well as end-of-shift and overnight AC charging.
