Overview This 2026 Peterbilt Model 589 Traditional is a tandem day cab tractor built with the Model 589 Legendary Package and a 131" BBC. It is spec'd for machinery hauling in heavy equipment service. The unit was upfit with a Peterbilt 10" extended cab and a split windshield package. GCW and GVWR are both 66,000 lbs, with a maximum grade rating of 6% and a typical operating speed of 75 MPH. The powertrain is optimized for performance in vocational applications or with a heavy GCWR. Engine & Drivetrain Power comes from a Cummins X15 Productivity Series engine rated at 565 HP at 1,950 RPM, governed at 2,000 RPM, with 1,850 lb-ft of torque at 1,000 RPM. It meets 2024 emissions standards. The engine uses an Intebrake engine brake with controls on the right-hand column, EMUX electronics architecture, an idle shutdown timer with ambient temperature overrule, and a 12-pin remote PTO/throttle provision in the engine bay. PTO maximum engine speed is set at 1,400. Supporting equipment includes a 270-amp alternator, a 110–120V immersion block heater, and four PACCAR premium 12V dual-purpose batteries rated at 2,920 CCA. There is also a battery jumper terminal, a low voltage disconnect system, and a Kissling 300-amp battery disconnect switch. Other engine equipment includes a 2-speed fan clutch for frequent start/stops, a 37.4 CFM naturally aspirated air compressor, a high-efficiency cooling system, and 15" premium stainless steel cowl-mounted air cleaners with slotted stainless caps. A Davco 382 fuel/water separator has 12V and 120V fuel filter heat. The exhaust is a dual SOC setup with a single DPF/SCR module under the cab on the right side. It exits through 7" chrome-plated steel standpipes at 36" height, with 45-degree curved tips and chrome over the elbows. The transmission is an Allison 4500 RDS-P Gen 6 Rugged Duty Series in a 6-speed configuration. It has a TC-561 torque converter, primary shift schedule 2, neutral at stop, and a dash-mounted push-button shifter. The driveline is an RPL35 SD main driveline with two midship bearings and an RPL25 interaxle driveline. A dash-mounted, single-acting electric-over-hydraulic PTO control is included. The rear axle ratio is 4.10. Chassis & Axles Wheelbase is 270", with 99.9" bumper-to-back-of-cab, 170.1" cab-to-axle, and 235.1" cab-to-end-of-frame. The frame uses 11-5/8" steel rails to 444" at 3/8" thickness with a full 10-3/4" x 3/8" steel inner liner. The rails are zinc coated with anti-corrosion treatment. Crossmembers are aluminum and frame components are bolted rather than huck-fastened. It has heavy-duty iron front spring brackets and a tapered end of frame with a crossmember and kingpin cutout. The front axle is a Meritor MFS20 rated at 20,000 lbs with a 3.5" drop. Steering is a TRW THP60 dual-gear power steering system with a frame-mounted reservoir and cooler. The front also has PHP10 iron Preset+ hubs, air disc brakes with pad dust shields, greasable spring pins, and 50 mm spacer blocks. The rear axles are Meritor RT46-164E, rated at 46,000 lbs, with 5/8" wall housings. They use PHP10 iron Preset+ hubs, air disc brakes with pad dust shields, and tandem differential locks with speed interlock. Traction control and full lock have separate dash controls. GAWR is 20,000 lbs front and 23,000 lbs on each rear axle. Braking and safety systems include 6S6M ABS with an off-road switch, an SBM valve, an ISO 3731 trailer ABS power connector, and a tire pressure monitoring system. All axles use synthetic lubricant. Suspension The front runs taper leaf springs rated at 20,000 lbs with Tenneco shocks. The rear is a Neway ADZ246 air suspension rated at 46,000 lbs with 54" axle spacing and dual leveling valves. A dash-mounted dump switch with an indicator light lets you dump the suspension. Two backlit 52 mm gauges show air suspension pressure. Cab & Interior The aluminum cab has a 131" BBC aluminum hood with a polished crown and spring tilt assist. It has been extended 10" and has painted back wall breathers, a smooth black matte tool tray, and no extended cab emblems. The split windshield package adds a painted reverse bowtie visor and painted door handles. The rear window is a fixed 3-piece glass unit. Outside, the cab has polished stainless rocker panels, keyless entry, power door locks and windows, and cab air suspension. There is thermal insulation, a combination fresh air heater/air conditioner, and an under-cab air horn. The Platinum interior is Alpine Gray with black floor carpet. Both seats are black leather Peterbilt LX Premium seats with air ride, a high back, and a leather comfort package. The driver seat has left and right armrests and the passenger seat has a left armrest. The steering column tilts and telescopes and carries a premium leather-wrapped multi-function wheel with audio and cruise controls. For audio, it has a ConcertClass AM/FM/WB radio with 3.5 aux, satellite radio, Bluetooth phone and audio, a USB port, and a premium six-speaker package with tweeters. The radio mutes when the transmission is in reverse. A Cobra 29 CB with weatherband is mounted in the center of the header with a vertical antenna behind the cab. The truck also has global telematics hardware, a pull-out tray over the glove box, and auto-reset circuit protection. The main instrument panel is a 15" digital cluster. It shows transmission oil temperature, air filter restriction with increased full indication, brake application pressure, trailer reservoir pressure, secondary fuel level, engine hours, PTO hours, and engine percent torque. Additional backlit 52 mm gauges show front and rear drive axle oil temperature (with a guard on the rear axle gauge), engine oil temperature, and manifold pressure. All gauges have bright bezels. Extra controls include two additional dash switches and two electric-over-air spare rocker switches. The heated, motorized 7"x18" stainless West Coast mirrors are paired with two 8" heated stainless convex mirrors and a look-down mirror over the passenger door. Wipers are electric with an intermittent feature, and the turn signals self-cancel. A removable bugscreen sits behind the grille. The truck ships with a fire extinguisher and a triangle reflector kit, and has an adjustable 87–112 dB backup alarm. Body & Equipment The truck is set up for tractor use. It has sliding fifth wheel valve and plumbing to the end of frame with 3 ft of extra hose, plus fifth wheel slide controls. Air and trailer equipment starts with a heated Bendix AD-HF EP air dryer with a coalescing filter and extended purge. Air tanks are aluminum with pull cords: polished tanks outside the frame rails and natural tanks under the box. Other air components include nylon chassis hose, extra air/electric lines in the end of frame with a diversion valve and socket, and 12' straight 3-in-1 lines with two cast 7-way plugs. There is a chromed hose tenna, a self-returning dash-mounted hand valve plumbed to all service brakes, and a dash switch that powers the J560 with the key on. Fuel capacity is 200 gallons in two polished 26" aluminum 100-gallon tanks behind the cab on each side. Each tank has four polished straps, a locking cap, dual draw/return shutoff valves, and a secondary sending unit. A large 30-gallon DEF tank with a polished stainless cover is mounted on the left side, rearward of the fuel tank. The stylized aluminum battery box is polished and has a non-slip step. A non-slip aluminum aftertreatment cab entry step is on the right side. Up front is a chromed steel Texas-style bumper with two tow points. The truck also has PolyArmor black quarter fenders, 2" fender lips, and premium stainless mudflap hangers with Peterbilt-logo flaps. For lighting, the truck has LED pod headlights with integral turn signals and LED stop/turn/tail/backup lights. There are LED turn signals on the mirrors, five LED bus bullet marker lights, a mid-frame marker light, and two flush-mounted LED load lights. It is also wired for fog lights, a beacon/strobe, and auxiliary lights under the cab and on the air cleaners. The paint is Axalta two-stage Black (L0001EY) on the cab, hood, fenders, cab roof, and extended cab section, with a black frame (L0001EA). Tires & Wheels The front tires are 385/65R22.5 20-ply X Multi HL Z. They are mounted on Alcoa 22.5x12.25 high-polish aluminum wheels with a 2.75" inset, a mirror-polished outer surface, and a Dura-Bright finish. The rear tires are eight 11R24.5 16-ply XDA5+ on eight Alcoa 24.5x8.25 high-polish aluminum wheels with mirror-polished outer surfaces.
