Rent/LeaseSimilar in many design aspects to food-grade tank trailers, sanitary trailers go a step beyond to comply with the stringent 3-A Sanitary Standards laid out by several international food associations and the U.S. FDA.
Read More (About Sanitary Tank Semitrailers)Sanitary tank semitrailers represent one of several types of tank semitrailers in use throughout the trucking industry. As the name suggests, these trailers are designed and built for the sanitary transport of milk, water, juices, and other food-grade products. Note that you’ll find another entire category of trailers referred to as “food-grade” semitrailers, but sanitary trailers must meet the stringent 3-A Sanitary Standards laid out by the 3-A SSI working group (which includes representatives from the International Dairy Foods Association, the Food Processing Suppliers Association, the International Association for Food Protection, and the U.S. FDA) to ensure the integrity of equipment used to process and transport food. As such, you’ll also see these trailers referred to as “3A” trailers.
Sanitary tank trailers are most often constructed of stainless steel and are typically well-insulated to aid in controlling the temperature of their contents for freshness and quality control. The trailers’ rings, frames, protective jacketing, ladders, gangways, manholes, valves, and other components are also often built from stainless steel; depending on the model, sanitary hoses, motors, pumps, rear discharge systems, and spill dams may also be included.
Tank capacities for sanitary tank semitrailers generally range from 5,000 to 10,000 gallons (18,927 to 37,854 liters) or more. The tanks usually have an elliptical or cylindrical shape and a low center of gravity that provides easier control during transport. Polar, a leading manufacturer of sanitary tank semitrailers, says the lower aerodynamic profile of its Food Grade/3A Transport model also results in better fuel efficiency. Trailers are available with one or more compartments; those with multiple compartments can be used to simultaneously transport multiple products or one product. Either way, breaking the tank’s capacity into smaller subsegments minimizes material surging while in motion, making them safer and easier to control. Many tank trailers incorporate lightweight aluminum wheels and other components when possible to reduce their operating weight and maximize payloads. Tank trailers often come equipped with dual rear axles but may have three, five, or even eight axles, depending on their rated capacities.
