    About Cab & Chassis Trucks

As its name suggests, a cab and chassis truck is an incomplete vehicle meant to be finished after purchase by attaching a truck body, a tank, or other equipment.

    Upfit Options

The bare frame rails behind the cabin of a cab and chassis truck have no fifth-wheel hitch, as would a rigid or tractor truck designed to haul semitrailers. Instead, the open chassis provides a platform for upfitters to equip the vehicle and serve a particular role. Common options include a tipper, tray, service body, beavertail, lube and/or fuel tank, tow body, cargo box, chipper body, knuckle boom crane, drilling derrick, spreader body, beverage body, curtainside body, or hooklift. Other choices include refuse collection and compaction equipment, a cherry picker, log carrier, concrete agitator, livestock body, car carrier, refrigerated box body, vacuum system, water tank, concrete pump, or grain body.

    Chassis Configurations

To satisfy customer requirements, cab and chassis trucks are often available in a wide range of chassis configurations. From 4x2 and 4x4 designs to larger 6x4, 6x6, and 8x6 configurations, most manufacturers offer a cab and chassis vehicle to handle the body type and payload requirements for specific applications. Modern cab and chassis vehicles also include modular chassis options for component installation, so upfitters can more easily install or remount electrical and fluid systems to accommodate specific chassis and body functions.

    Chassis Classifications

A cab and chassis truck’s gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) determines how much weight the vehicle can transport once equipped with a body to match its primary application. Often, manufacturers will categorize the cab and chassis truck by a class that represents a GVWR range. For example, Class 3 vehicles are often assigned a weight rating around 14,000 pounds (6,350 kilograms), while a Class 6 model typically has a GVWR of 26,000 lbs (11,793 kg). Class 8 cab and chassis trucks represent the heaviest-duty models available and cover a wide GVWR range to account for rugged chassis, high axle weight ratings, and heavy-duty upfit options.
