About Dry Van Trucks & Straight Trucks

Freightliner Business Class M2 106 Dry Van Truck

Although other types of box trucks (such as cutaway-cube, dry cargo delivery, and moving trucks) are often medium- or even light-duty trucks, dry van trucks and straight trucks are generally heavy-duty vehicles, classified either as Class 7 or Class 8 vehicles. They have a cargo box attached to the chassis behind the cab that often measures 20 feet (6.1 meters) long or longer and 8 to 10 ft (2.4 to 3 m) tall. Depending on the model, the body may have a roll-up or swing rear door, curbside door, and/or roadside door. This differs from a curtainside truck that has a cargo box with flexible, fabric sides that roll up to provide exceptionally easy loading and unloading. Although boxes vary in size and features, they’re generally designed to haul cargo and are often used to carry out local or regional deliveries.

    Characteristics

Diesel engines, manual and automatic six-speed transmissions, a standard conventional cab, a 4x2 drivetrain, air ride or spring suspensions, and lift gates are common features of dry van trucks and straight trucks. A late-model Freightliner Business Class M2 106 provides options for up to 360 horsepower (268.5 kilowatts) and 1,150 pounds-foot (1,559 newton-meters) of torque, plus driver convenience and safety features like a 2,500-square-inch (1.6-square-meter) windshield and active brake assist, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, and side guard assist systems. The International DuraStar 4300 and 4400 offers Cummins B6.7 or L9 engine options with up to 350 HP (261 kW) of rated power and 1,000 lbs-ft (1,356 N-m) of torque, plus automatic or manual Allison and Eaton transmission choices, and a swept-back windshield and 50-degree wheel cuts to enhance driver visibility.
