    About Packer Garbage Trucks

Packer garbage trucks are Class 4 to Class 8 refuse vehicles with GVWRs (gross vehicle weight ratings) of 14,001 to 26,000 pounds (6,350.7 and 11,793.4 kilograms) and up. There are several types of packer garbage trucks available, including front loaders, rear loaders, and side loaders. While the garbage trucks sold on TruckPaper.com come as a complete unit, it is possible to buy cab and chassis trucks and refuse bodies separately.

Often used to pick up and empty the big commercial dumpsters used by restaurants and retail locations, front loaders are equipped with hydraulic arms that pick up dumpsters from the front, unload them into an opening at the top, and put the dumpster back in its place. Rear loaders typically require one or two crew members to empty trash cans into the rear compartment and then compact the trash inside using curbside controls and another to drive and to compact the load as needed using controls inside the cab. Side-loader models may only require one operator, as they possess arms on the side that can reach out, grab a garbage can, unload it, and then return it, all as part of an automated process initiated using in-cab controls.

    Packer vs. Roll-Off

Roll-off garbage trucks lack the refuse bodies you’ll find on packer models. Instead, they have a tipping truck bed with a hydraulic loader arm or a winch and cable designed to load and unload large, roll-off garbage and recycling containers. Roll-off trucks are often used to pick up garbage and material waste on construction jobsites and the largest containers used at retail locations; a driver can drop off a container and then pick it up at predetermined intervals or once it is full. The driver then hauls the container to a waste or recycling center, unloads the container, and either leaves it onsite, takes it back to the previous site, or delivers it to a new location.

    Battery-Electric Trucks

As waste disposal companies and municipal refuse fleets look to decrease their carbon footprints, they are increasingly looking to replace traditional diesel-powered garbage trucks with zero-emission electric trucks. A prominent example is Mack’s LR Electric, which matches the performance of standard garbage trucks but reduces carbon emissions and produces much lower levels of ambient noise. In addition, garbage and recycling pickup routes are a good fit for electric trucks that use regenerative braking to recapture battery energy, as they require a truck to make dozens if not hundreds of stops per day. With the right planning, an electric truck can also be recharged over a refuse disposal crew’s lunch break.
