    About Step Vans

FedEx, UPS, and Amazon are just a few of the thousands of companies worldwide that use step vans daily to make deliveries to customers. Also known as “multi-stop trucks,” “walk-in delivery vans,” and “bread trucks,” these light- and medium-duty vehicles have a full-size door and built-in steps on the passenger side that make it easy for the driver to get in and out quickly. Most step vans also have a sliding door on the bulkhead wall behind the driver’s seat for convenient walk-in cargo access. Depending on the model, a roadside door, full-size rear swing doors, and/or a roll-up rear door may also be included to provide expanded access to the cargo space, which itself is enclosed to keep items dry, organized, and safe. You’ll also find step vans that have a lift-end gate to make the loading and unloading of multiple or larger items less difficult.

    Power Options

Light-duty step vans like those in the popular Ford E350 and E450 series typically have a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) between 6,001 and 14,000 pounds (2,722 and 6,350 kilograms). Medium-duty models like the Freightliner MT45 and MT55 have GVWRs that generally land between 14,001 and 26,000 lbs (6,350 and 11,793 kg). Although the majority of steps vans on the market have a gas- or diesel-powered engine, battery-electric step vans and models powered by alternative fuels are growing in number as businesses increasingly seek to lower their carbon footprints and meet stringent emissions requirements to operate in urban areas. Automatic five- and six-speed transmissions and spring and air ride suspensions are also common to step vans.

    Cargo Features

A step van’s walk-in cargo area typically ranges in length from 12 to 24 feet (3.7 to 7.3 meters). A center aisle is usually provided to make moving within the van more convenient, and cargo-area lighting and/or a translucent roof may be included to enhance visibility. To organize and store items, tools, and other products, full- and partial-length shelves, lockable bins, tie-downs, and other options are often available. To make operating these vehicles easier and safer, many come with driver assistance and safety systems such as a backup camera, a backup alarm, traction control, anti-lock braking systems, front and rear anti-roll bars, and electronic stability control.
