Wind turbines are massive and must be hauled to assembly sites in multiple loads using specialized trailers. Blade and tower trailers, also sometimes called “Schnabel trailers” or “wind tower trailers,” are specially designed to transport wind turbine components including blades, generators, and towers. Turbine blades are frequently around 130 feet (40 meters) long or longer as turbine designs grow larger to generate more energy; this makes them significantly longer than most conventional trailers can handle. While tower sections and generators are shorter, their weight is problematic. Tower bases can weight upwards of 50 tons (45 metric tons). Many blade trailers feature a multi-axle Schnabel design with telescopic sections that lock into place to adjust the trailer’s length to fit the blade.

Tower sections can include electrical apparatus, generators, and other specialty gear that is difficult to stow securely. Stout tower bases may require a tower trailer with a low cargo height to avoid overhead obstructions, and the heavy weight of the tower may necessitate a large number of axles, in some cases as many as 13.

Basic Trailer Structure

Blade trailers typically have four main components: a gooseneck hitch, a steering structure, an extendable beam, and the tail platform. The gooseneck connection between the truck and the trailer can often be raised or lowered as needed to meet the height of the truck. The steering structure is specially designed to ensure the long trailer can move as needed through curves and turns during transport. The extendable beam allows the trailer to conform to the size of its cargo, and the tail platform keeps the load in place from loading to unloading. Tower trailers have adapters that can be adjusted to fit a tower’s dimensions and securely hold it in place.
