    About Dump Trailers

A dump trailer in this category is typically an end-dump model that can be hauled by a pickup or medium-duty truck. They’re useful for hauling debris, dirt, building materials, landscaping equipment, boulders, demolition rubble, and more. (For semi-trailers with dump capabilities, click here .)

    Characteristics

A dump trailer, sometimes called a “dump box trailer,” has a gooseneck, bumper pull, or pintle hitch tow mechanism. Many are in the 14,000- to 16,000-pound (6,350 to 7,260-kilogram) gross vehicle weight range with 12-, 14-, or 16-foot (3.7-, 4.3-, or 4.9-meter) beds. However, models in the category can range from 5,000 to 20,000 lbs (2,270 to 9,070 kg) GVWR or more, and their beds can be 20 feet (6.1 m) long or more.

Dump trailers usually unload their boxes by tipping up the front end via hydraulic cylinder or cylinders to let the cargo slide out the back. The cylinder may power a scissor lift mechanism or it may raise the dump box directly. Some models use a telescoping hydraulic cylinder with extra-long extension capability.

    Features

The rear gate of a dump trailer’s box can be a spreader gate, a split barn door type, a tailgate, or a removable (take-off) gate, although many models’ gates are a combination of these types to give the trailer more versatility in the jobs it can perform. Some have slide-out or fold-up ramps for loading compact wheeled or tracked equipment. Many dump boxes include roll-up tarp coverings to prevent loss of material at highway speeds.

The majority of dump box trailers ride on two or three axles rated at 7,000 pounds each. Many feature electric brakes, and newer model years often come with LED brake lights as standard equipment. Up front, the drop-leg jack stand may be powered or manually operated. A trailer’s battery and electrically driven hydraulic pump is usually found in a lidded compartment in front of the dump box, often accompanied by a battery charger. Controls to raise or lower the box may be corded or wireless.
