Dump bodies come in different lengths and a variety of deck heights. Some are square body dump boxes with flat sides and flatbeds or flat floors, which maximize the interior space available and allow hauling of flat-bottomed objects such as barrels or pallets. Other dump bodies have radius sides, also known as “half-round” or “elliptical” sides. These give up a little capacity and versatility in the types of things they can haul in favor of resistance to damage, natural centering of the load, and ease of dumping.

Some dump truck bodies have removable or fold-down sides to allow forklift access to their cargo. There are also many tailgate options available. Smaller dump bodies typically have tailgates that swing down on lower hinges. Heavier-duty dump truck bodies most often have a tailgate that swings up on its top hinges, or a high-lift tailgate that opens and lifts above the dump body. Extras that may be sold with a dump box include an underbody hoist, electric or manual tarp, hydraulic pump, hydraulic tank, and power take-off (PTO).
