    About Dump Trucks

A dump truck, also known as “dumper,” “tipper,” or a “tip truck,” is used to carry loose material such as dirt, gravel, construction debris, or other items that need to be picked up at one location and then dumped at a different location. The first motorized dump trucks appeared in the United States in the early 1900s.

Like most trucks, dump trucks are available in light-, medium-, and heavy-duty classifications. Light-duty models fall in Class 1, 2, and 3 and can handle up to 14,000 pounds (6,350 kilograms). Medium-duty dump trucks fall in Class 4, 5, and 6 and can handle 14,001 to 26,000 lbs (11,793 kg), while heavy-duty Class 7 or 8 dump trucks can handle 26,001 pounds or more.

    Types Of Dump Trucks

Dump trucks are available in several forms, including the more common standard and semitrailer dump trucks as well as side-dump and bottom-dump models. The standard dump truck has a truck chassis with a hydraulic hoist beneath a dump body that’s mounted to the frame. The semitrailer dump truck is a tractor-trailer with a much bigger hopper affixed to the trailer, but functions in the same way. For large hauls, some operations employ a truck and pup configuration, which entails a standard dump truck pulling a dump trailer (the “pup”) that’s equipped with its own hydraulic hoist for unloading.

While most dump trucks have a tailgate that usually swings up on its top hinges or uses a high-lift tailgate that lifts open and above the dump body, side-dump and bottom-dump models, as their names suggest, dump their loads either from the side or the bottom.

    Continuous Innovation

Dump truck manufacturers, as with all truck manufacturers, are designing trucks with improved fuel efficiency and aerodynamics and are even making low- or zero-emission truck models. Major efforts are being made to improve safety, with truck manufacturers working on driver assistance and collision mitigation systems, along with enhanced stability control and external camera systems for improved jobsite visibility. Truck ergonomics are also important; manufacturers put considerable thought into step and handle placement outside the truck as well as the placement of interior controls in order to reduce strain and increase the comfort of drivers over the course of long shifts.
