    About Garbage Trucks

Also known as “waste and refuse collection vehicles” and “trash trucks,” garbage trucks collect and transport waste and recyclable materials from residential areas, construction and industrial worksites, and other locations. Although people have been collecting and disposing of waste for centuries, beginning with horse-drawn wagons, developments over the years have greatly reduced the amount of manual labor that’s required, with some trucks even automating the task and allowing for one-worker operation.

    A History Of Innovation

Key innovations have included the Thornycroft Steam Wagon Company of London developing one of the first self-propelled trucks with a truck body for collecting dust and refuse. George Dempster’s Dempster-Dumpster marked the beginning of wheeled containers, or dumpsters, which are lifted and tipped into a truck. Dempster also developed an early front-loading garbage truck and an early predecessor to today’s roll-off garbage trucks. In 1938, the Garwood Load Packer was one of the first trucks to include a hydraulic compactor.

    Packer & Roll-Off Trucks

There’s a wide assortment of medium-duty and Class 7 and Class 8 heavy-duty garbage trucks available on TruckPaper.com suitable for commercial and residential applications, including in front-loader, rear-loader, and automatic and manual side-loader designs. In addition to packer garbage trucks, which use a hydraulic compactor to pack the waste inside the truck body in order to haul huge loads, there are roll-off garbage trucks that use a hydraulic hook lift or a winch to load and unload bulk garbage containers onto the chassis for drop-off or pickup and disposal.

    Common Options

Garbage trucks are available with gas and diesel engines, cabover and conventional cab configurations, and automatic and manual transmissions. Modern garbage trucks benefit from the latest in driver assistance and safety technologies, such as adaptive cruise control, collision warning systems, backup cameras, and others, plus dual steering, side-passenger controls, wireless remote control functionally, and electric roll tarp systems. In the future, expect more battery-electric garbage trucks like the Mack LR Electric to enter the market.
