    About Hot Shot Trucks

Many people who enlist the services of a hot shot truck are on a tight deadline and need to get a load from point A to point B as quickly as possible. Oftentimes, a hot shot truck will haul a less-than-truckload (LTL) shipment needed immediately to keep production up and running. Common hot shot loads include construction equipment (wheel loaders, excavators, skid steers, forklifts, and other heavy machinery), construction site-related materials, agricultural equipment, and more.

    Delivering On A Deadline

Companies that offer hot shot trucking services often reserve a truck (or trucks) ideal for transporting LTL shipments, rather than employ a Class 8 semitruck or straight truck that could be otherwise filled with goods. As such, hot shot trucks are typically Class 3 to Class 6 trucks ranging from 10,001 to 26,000 pounds (roughly 4,500 to 11,800 kilograms). Hot shot trucks are often equipped with a fifth-wheel hitch, so operators can couple the truck with the right trailer for the job based on the weight and dimensions of the load. Common trailers used in hot shot trucking include car haulers, flatbed trailers, drop-deck trailers, lowboy trailers, and gooseneck trailers.

    Hot Shot vs. Expeditor Trucks

Hot shot trucks and expeditor trucks are both set up to haul a load anywhere at a moment’s notice, but instead of the LTL shipments typically hauled with hot shot trucks, expeditor trucks are generally a modified heavy-duty box or moving truck, dry van truck, or reefer truck with cargo boxes anywhere from 10 to 26 feet (3 to 8 meters) in length. The long cargo box allows service providers to fill the truck with freight, such as machinery parts, palletized loads, perishable goods, and other valuable equipment that can fit within the cargo box. Similar to hot shot shipments, freight on expeditor trucks isn’t typically hauled with other loads.
