    About Oilfield Semitrailers

Most oilfield semitrailers are long, multi-axle units with flat decks suitable for carrying very heavy equipment. They are often equipped with live rollers or kicker rolls designed to ease the loading of skid-mounted equipment, including tail rollers, pop-up rollers, and sometimes neck rollers. Oil field trailers also have rugged suspensions and, in some cases, ample ground clearance to transport oil and gas equipment the last mile(s) off-road.

    Types & Features

Lowboys, removable goosenecks (RGNs), drop decks or step decks, sliding axle trailers, and other types of semitrailers have all been adapted to oilfield use. They come in a variety of weight ratings ranging from around 35 to 70 tons (32 to 64 metric tons) to suit your specific needs. Many oilfield trailers are supported by three, four, or even five axles and are built with extra-strong decking materials and extendable decks (e.g. stretch trailers) to allow them to support long, heavy generators, compressors, crew trailers, oil rig components, pipe sections, and so on. Amenities can include folding necks, flip necks, multi-height scissor necks, onboard winches, and fold-up dolly legs.

Oil field floats are another staple of the petrochemical industry. These trailers typically have straight decks mounted above the wheels for ground clearance, as well as landing gear that can fold up to allow the full-width nose or pickup throat to rest on the ground. A ramp or wedge on the nose allows machinery or equipment to be loaded from the front, and a lift eye allows the tow vehicle to winch the loaded trailer back up from the ground.

There are also smaller, supplemental trailers to assist in transporting the load. A short booster trailer can attach to the rear of the main trailer for extra payload capacity. To split the kingpin load and spread out the weight over more axles, a helper dolly can act as an intermediate section between the tractor and the main trailer. A jeep dolly can do the same thing and address bridge load requirements at the same time. These dollies have their own fifth wheels and kingpins. A 2-3-2 oilfield trailer set, for example, has a two-axle jeep or helper dolly, a three-axle main trailer, and a two-axle booster.

Finally, there are other types of trailers categorized as oilfield models because of the specialized equipment they carry or the purpose they serve in the oil and gas production process. These can include nitrogen pump trailers, sand and gravel trailers, manifold trailers, coiled tubing trailers for well intervention, well completion trailers, baghouse dust collection trailers, chemical additive (chem add) trailers, and hydration trailers, among others.
