    About Roll-Off Garbage Trucks

Roll-off garbage trucks are refuse vehicles, typically with gross vehicle weight ratings (GVWRs) from 14,001 to 26,000 pounds (6,350 and 11,793 kilograms) and above, placing them in the Class 4 to Class 8 range. Roll-off trucks feature hydraulic tipping flatbeds for loading and unloading waste and recycling containers. Some models use a winch and cable system to load roll-off containers onto the bed, while others are equipped with a hook-lift system where an arm reaches out, hooks the container under a bar or handle and hauls it onto the bed.

    Roll-Off vs. Packer

Packer garbage trucks are available in front loader, rear loader, and side loader configurations and are ideal for weekly residential or light commercial trash collection. Front loader models use arms in the front to pick up smaller commercial dumpsters and unload them into an open top in the truck body, which periodically compacts its trash load in order to take on more. Rear loaders typically require a worker to unload trash cans into the rear compartment where they can then be compacted using controls in the cab or at the rear of the truck. Side loaders support one-man operation with automated hydraulic arms that reach out to grab containers, unload them, and then put them back into place.

Roll-off garbage trucks, on the other hand, are generally used for construction work, building projects, and emptying or replacing garbage dumpsters at large retail locations or at recycling collection sites because the driver can drop off a container and then pick it up when it’s full or the job is completed. The operator can then haul it to a waste or recycling center, unload it, and then return it or take it to a different site.
