    About Rollback Tow Trucks

    International MV Rollback Tow Truck

Rollback tow trucks are a good fit for transporting severely damaged vehicles or for long-haul tows. Some models can carry large construction equipment that can’t otherwise be driven on public roadways. Like a flatbed truck, a rollback tow truck sports a long, flat bed around 20 feet (6 meters) in length or longer at the rear onto which cars, trucks, heavy construction equipment, and other vehicles can be loaded. Unlike the bed of a flatbed truck, however, a rollback tow truck’s bed slides (or rolls) back and tilts downward on a hydraulic mechanism, creating a ramp that operators can use to drive a towed vehicle onto or, alternatively, pull a towed vehicle onto using a winch. These trucks are also frequently outfitted with storage compartments for load-securing straps and other towing-related gear.

    Comparisons To Wreckers

Rollback tow trucks are generally a better option for transporting severely damaged vehicles than wrecker tow trucks, as in these cases a vehicle often either isn’t safe to pull behind a truck or can’t be moved even under another vehicle’s power. They are also often preferred when towing new, luxury, restored, or classic automobiles due to the reduced likelihood of the towed vehicle to be scraped, dented, or otherwise damaged. Rollback tow trucks are also favored for long-haul tows and tows involving four-wheel drive vehicles to eliminate the possibility of damaging the vehicle’s transmission. Some heavy-duty rollback trucks are capable of carrying multiple vehicles at once.
