Stoughton Trailers designs and manufactures grain and livestock trailers, dry van trailers, and refrigerated trailers, as well as chassis for hauling intermodal transport containers. The company also owns Barrett Trailers, a leading manufacturer of gooseneck and ground-load trailers. Stoughton was founded in 1961 and is a family-owned and operated business with more than a million square feet of manufacturing space in southern Wisconsin.

The company’s motto is “It’s in the details,” which refers to the level of quality control Stoughton bakes into the design, development, and build processes. For example, Stoughton maintains its own tool and die department for complete control over the fabrication of each component. Stoughton also fabricates the subassemblies in-house—using automated equipment to ensure tight tolerances when cutting, shearing, punching, or bending parts. Automated equipment is also used during assembly to let the crew focus on quality and efficiency. Quality monitors continuously review and audit procedures to deliver a consistent Stoughton product.

Stoughton’s redesigned underride guard, designed to better protect automobile drivers involved in a rear-end crash with a Stoughton box trailer, became standard equipment on all the company’s dry vans in November 2016. The part was named to Heavy Duty Trucking Magazine’s Top 20 Products list for 2017.
