    About Traveling Axle Semi-Trailers

A traveling axle semi-trailer is also known as a “sliding axle trailer,” a “hydraulic tilt trailer,” or generically as a “Landoll,” after inventor Don Landoll’s eponymous company, which still makes them more than 50 years later. The primary feature of this type of flatbed is a hydraulic undercarriage that can move the axle(s) forward or backward along the length of the trailer. Like moving the fulcrum of a seesaw, bringing the trailer’s wheels forward allows the bed to tilt down to the ground at a very low (shallow) loading angle such as 7 or 8 degrees. This makes it easier to load storage containers, wheeled machinery, and tracked equipment, including machines with low clearance such as forklifts, compactors, and asphalt pavers.

    Configurations

Since Landoll’s 1969 invention of the traveling axle trailer category, there have been variations introduced by a variety of manufacturers. Units with two or three axles are marketed as sliding tandems or sliding tri-axles, respectively.

A traveling tail trailer can use its axle position and possibly auxiliary hydraulic cylinders to lower just the rear portion of the deck to the ground or raise it up to a dock. A hydraulic tail unit, meanwhile, can lower or lift the rear deck whether its axles are of the sliding kind or the fixed type.

    Features

Many sliding axle trailers come with winches or chains to help them load and unload shipping containers. Anti-corrosion improvements over the decades have led manufacturers to offer better protectants such as galvanizing and powder coating.

Wireless remote controls are a popular recent feature. They allow the operator to control the tilt and winch from a better vantage point than side-mounted hydraulic levers. Another practical recent upgrade is the advent of LED brake lights, which draw less power and can last longer than their incandescent ancestors.
