    About Volvo Trucks North America

The first Volvo truck rolled off the production line in 1928, and by the 1930s, Volvo was exporting its heavy-duty trucks outside Scandinavia. Volvo Trucks North America is a division of the historic Volvo Group, and manufactures a complete range of heavy-duty and medium-duty trucks for sale and use in North America. With the VNR regional-haul, VNL long-haul, and VNX heavy haul series, Volvo offers a wide selection of semi-truck models built for particular hauling applications. Volvo’s North American lineup also includes the VHD series, designed for heavy-duty vocational work, and VAH-series vehicle haulers.

    Volvo VAH

The VAH auto hauler series is optimized for vehicle transport efficiency and load flexibility. To maximize carrying capacity, Volvo offers a reduced-height cab option that allows operators to transport larger passenger vehicles like pickup trucks and SUVs above the cab without violating height and clearance regulations. The VAH series also features deep-drop front axles and a low-height Volvo Air Ride rear suspension to provide additional load flexibility. Volvo’s latest VAH lineup includes three cab options: the VAH 300 day cab, the VAH 400 sleeper, and the VAH 600 sleeper.

    Volvo VHD

Volvo VHD vocational trucks are equipped to work with cranes, dump bodies, concrete mixers, or roll-off and recycling bodies. In 2020, Volvo updated the VHD series to make the trucks more versatile and reliable. Just a couple of the key updates included heavy-duty tow hitches that support up to 80,000 pounds (36,287 kilograms), as well as the T-Ride suspension with a rugged ride stiffness option, which is ideal for mixers and trucks with wing plows. Volvo also began providing an optional de-icing system for VHD trucks working in the cold. For applications requiring a tight turning radius, Volvo offers the VHD 300 and VHD 400 in axle back configurations. Wheelbase length across the VHD series ranges from 134 to 318 inches (3,404 to 8,077 millimeters), providing a wide selection of chassis options to ideally fit specific vocational applications.

    Volvo VNL

Volvo’s VNL lineup includes VNL 300 day cabs and VNL 400, 740, 760, and 860 sleeper trucks. In 2022, Volvo Trucks North America made its latest-generation D13 Turbo Compound engine standard on all VNL models. The 13-liter, inline six-cylinder engine includes a Dynamic Torque feature that adjusts its power according to the load while maintaining performance. As of this writing, Volvo’s DT13TC engine is available with power ratings of 405, 425, and 455 horsepower (302, 317, and 339 kilowatts) and 1,750 and 1,860 pounds-foot (2,373 and 2,522 newton-meters) of torque. In 2018, Volvo offered the VNL 300 with the Cummins ISX12N natural gas engine, which was equally versatile in that it could run on compressed natural gas (CNG), liquefied natural gas (LNG), and renewable natural gas; the ISX12N doesn’t appear to be a factory option as of this writing. VNL trucks can be equipped with Volvo’s latest driver assistance technologies, including constantly improving features such as adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, a forward collision heads-up warning, and automated safety technologies like emergency braking.

    Volvo VNR

Volvo replaced the VNM series with VNR trucks in 2017, introducing a new hood designed to provide better visibility and improved aerodynamics. The VNR family has grown to include the VNR 300, 400, 640, and 660 models, all of which are available with Volvo’s I-Shift intelligent automated manual transmission. Volvo has also announced the VNR Electric, a battery-electric truck available in multiple configurations that’s designed for zero-emissions local and regional distribution. Volvo’s next-generation VNR Electric features a six-battery pack that brings the truck’s range to 275 miles (442 kilometers). Trucks from the VNR range can be configured with a Volvo D11 or D13 engine; the D11 engines range from 325 to 425 HP (242 to 317 kW) in rated power, while D13 power plants come with power ratings from 405 to 500 HP (302 to 373 kW).

    Volvo VNX

Built for use in logging, hauling heavy equipment, and other heavy-duty applications, the VNX series provides the power and durability necessary for the most rugged jobs. The VNX 300 comes in a day cab configuration, the VNX 400 has a flat-roof sleeper, and the VNX 740 offers a 70-inch sleeper for long-haul operations. The VNX series also comes with access to the full complement of safety, comfort, and connectivity features available on Volvo’s other lines. Volvo Enhanced Stability Technology (VEST), for example, includes an electronic stability control system designed to prevent jackknifing and rollovers in situations when a driver loses control of the vehicle.
