    Capacity & Features

New and used water tank trucks are often categorized according to their tank capacity and truck size, and as with other tank truck varieties, many if not most are medium- and heavy-duty models with gross vehicle weights (GVWs) ranging from 14,000 to more than 26,000 pounds (6350 to more than 11,793 kilograms). Heavy-duty water tank trucks are often equipped with water tanks with 4,000-gallon (15,000-liter) or higher capacities. Medium-duty models generally have tanks with capacities of around 2,000 gal (7,500 L).

The tanks on water tank trucks come in aluminum, steel, or plastic varieties that typically incorporate multiple compartments to help stabilize the load during transfer. Depending on the model and its intended use cases, a water tank truck may include front and rear spray bars; front, side, and back spray heads; spray and mist nozzles; water cannons; quick dump or gravity dump capabilities; automatic, manual, and spring-loaded hose reels; external water pumps; self-loading capabilities; off-highway tires for rougher terrain; fill pipes; power take-off (PTO), a self-contained pump engine or hydraulic drive system; and pressurization capabilities.
