Heavy-duty water tank trucks are often equipped with water tanks with 4,000-gallon (15,000-liter) or higher capacities. Medium-duty models generally have tanks with capacities of around 2,000 gal (7,500 L).

Depending on the model and its intended use cases, a water tank truck may include front and rear spray bars; front, side, and back spray heads; spray and mist nozzles; water cannons; quick dump or gravity dump capabilities; automatic, manual, and spring-loaded hose reels; external water pumps; self-loading capabilities; off-highway tires for rougher terrain; fill pipes; power take-off (PTO), a self-contained pump engine or hydraulic drive system; and pressurization capabilities.
