Rent/LeaseWith retractable PVC-reinforced fabric curtains running the length of the cargo platform, curtain side trucks protect freight from the elements during transport and simplify loading and unloading.
Read More (About Curtain Side Trucks)Drivers making frequent loading or unloading stops can benefit from the design of curtain side trucks, which combine the cargo-loading flexibility of a flatbed truck, but with protection from the elements. Drivers can slide the retractable PVC-reinforced fabric curtains open and closed as needed to load and/or unload, providing unobstructed access that allows cargo to be lifted from the sides (or back) of the truck, which is ideal for tight delivery schedules.
With a medium-duty curtain side truck, there’s no need for the driver to wait at a dock to unload cargo. The sliding curtains provide easy access for forklifts to efficiently unload the cargo, no matter where it’s located on the platform. Some curtain side trucks only offer a curtain on one side (and a solid wall on the opposite side for extra protection and to help secure load restraints), while others offer curtain access from both sides of the truck. Access from the rear door is also an option for cargo at the back.
Curtain side trucks offer more protection from the weather than a flatbed, so haulers can expand transport capabilities to include everything from weather-sensitive construction and manufacturing products to furniture, palletized freight, and retail materials.
Tarping loads on a flatbed can be time consuming and labor intensive. With a curtain side system, the driver can quickly and easily slide and lock down the curtain to enclose the cargo and protect it from inclement weather. Curtains are typically operational from ground height, so drivers won’t have to get up into the truck to enclose the system. Some curtain designs allow drivers to individually access certain side-wall curtains to prevent weather exposure to other cargo on the platform during delivery. Built To Deliver
Medium-duty curtain side trucks are often built on a Class 4, 5, or 6 chassis like Freightliner’s M2 series, Mitsubishi Fuso’s Canter series, and Hino’s 500 series. The base chassis typically has a 4x2, 6x2, or 6x4 axle configuration. Gross vehicle weight ratings (GVWRs) often range from 14,000 to 26,000 pounds (6,350 to 11,793 kilograms).
These vehicles have multiple applications, including general hauling, landscaping, piping, and construction. And operators can equip the truck with features to quickly and securely tie down regularly transported loads. On some models, the curtain might feature a lift out post that can be temporarily removed (or moved to another position) when loading or unloading cargo. Tensioning mechanisms and strong buckles are typically used to securely snap the side curtain in place.
