    About Boom Dolly Trailers

A boom dolly is a specialized type of trailer meant to support the boom attached to a crane being transported to a new location. It spreads out the weight of the crane to additional axles to meet legal weight limits on the roads along its route. Boom dollies also add axle spacing to comply with bridge laws.

Alternatively, a boom dolly trailer can be used to carry the crane’s counterweight, jib, block, ball, or other components instead of using another truck and driver. Manufacturers make their boom dollies as light as possible to give the customer wide latitude in the types of crane parts it can haul.

    Configurations

TransWorld 3S Series boom dolly trailer

Boom dollies require much more customization than a generic trailer because they have to be tailored to a particular model of crane. A few types of dollies can accommodate more than one model from a manufacturer, but on the whole, safety and handling concerns require fine-tuning to the exact model to be transported. Hence, boom dollies for sale often mention the make and category or model they’re designed for, such as a TransWorld 3S Series for Liebherr all-terrain cranes. Several dolly fabricators also take regional laws into account, adding extra axles for customers in states or provinces with strict weight limits.

Boom dollies are typically either the straight frame or articulating type. Some have widespread axles, steerable axles, and/or a long wheelbase, depending on the application. Dollies with a rolling tower assembly support the boom on a pedestal while also connecting to the crane’s pintle hitch via a drawbar. Rolling tower dollies speed up the connection process, and depending on the job, may not even need to be disconnected from the crane onsite.

A related type of trailer is a boom launch, which is a full-size trailer designed to haul an entire detached boom while the crane carrier is transported by a different truck and trailer. A boom launcher is powered, and it can quickly align the boom with the crane onsite for efficient reassembly without a helper crane. Boom launch trailers make transportation of heavier cranes more feasible.

    Recent Features

Manufacturers of boom dollies add or offer special features to increase safety, controllability, and utility. Many offer backup cameras, reverse steering, and articulation limiter straps to ease the process of backing up with a boom dolly. Some manufacturers have added additional safety interlocks to augment the typical wheel chocks and other features to prevent unwanted rolling. Boom dollies may also come with provisions for carrying other crane components such as outrigger pads, counterweight portions, rigging, and spreader beams. Leveling springs can also accelerate set up time.
