Crude oil tank trailers are generally made from aluminum or stainless steel. These tanks typically feature safety devices to release internal tank pressures using relief vents on the top and/or side of the tank. These vents are also designed in a way that doesn’t allow crude oil to be released in a rollover. Many have vapor recovery systems in place to prevent vapors from reaching the atmosphere.

The tanks themselves may be insulated or uninsulated, as well as in multi-compartment units to transport different crude oil types. Manufacturers might also include high-strength bumpers and internal baffles to minimize liquid surge and provide added strength to the barrel of the tank. Piping and pumping options may also be added to improve the trailer’s ability to load and unload the crude oil.
