    About Cutaway-Cube Box Trucks

Cutaway-cube box trucks are used to transport and deliver goods, equipment, and supplies. They also make excellent moving trucks, service and utility trucks, ambulances, and even shuttle buses. Also known as “cube vans,” “box vans,” “cutaway-cube vans,” and “straight trucks,” cutaway-cube box trucks typically have what’s more or less a cube-shaped box body that’s mounted on the chassis directly behind the cab. Some models include a walk-through passage or door between the cab and the cargo area.

    Characteristics

Cutaway-cube box trucks generally have bodies ranging in length from 12 to 20 feet (3.7 to 6.1 meters) or longer. Many are light-duty trucks and vans classified as Class 2 vehicles, with gross vehicle weight ratings (GVWRs) of 6,001 to 10,000 pounds (2,722 to 4,535 kilograms) or Class 3 vehicles weighing in from 10,001 to 14,000 lbs (4,536 to 6,350 kg). A smaller number of medium-duty models that fall within Class 4 to Class 6 classifications, with GVWRs from 14,001 to 26,000 lbs (6,350 to 11,793 kg) are also available. Unless a cutaway-cube box truck has a GVWR of more than 26,000 lbs, a commercial driver’s license (CDL) is not required to operate it.

Common cutaway-cube box makes and models include the Chevy Express 3500, the GMC Savana G3500, and Ford E350 and E450 box trucks. A late-model GMC Savana G3500 Cutaway Van, as an example, has a maximum GVWR of 12,300 lbs (5,579 kg) and comes in 139-, 159-, or 177-inch (3,530-, 4,038-, or 4,495-millimeter) wheelbase lengths. A late-model Ford E350 comes in single- and dual-rear wheel configurations with 138-, 158-, or 176-in. (3,505-, 4,013-, or 4,470-mm) wheelbase lengths and 10,050- to 12,500-lb (4,558- to 5,670-kg) GVWRs.

    Options & Features

Common features of cutaway-cube box trucks include an automatic six-speed transmission, gasoline engine, and spring suspension. Options for loading and accessing cargo include lift gates, pull-out ramps, rear roll-up doors, rear swing doors, curbside doors, step-up rear bumpers, and interior shelves. Like other commercial trucks, these trucks can also be equipped with a number of advanced systems for productivity and safety. Bluetooth hands-free phone call support is a common example. A Wi-Fi hotspot for a mobile office scenario is a productivity option that’s growing in popularity.

Safety systems and features available in recent cutaway-cube box trucks and vans include backup cameras, traction control, electronic stability control, and hill start assist (which automatically holds the brakes on a grade until the accelerator is pressed). You’ll also find trucks with forward impact warning/collision alert/distance alert features, emergency braking, post-collision braking, lane departure warning, and adaptive cruise control.
