    Size & Construction

Flatbed truck bodies are available for nearly every size of truck on the market, from light-duty pickups to Class 8 trucks. Flatbed body lengths commonly range from 10 to 35 feet (3 to 10.7 meters). The frame is often constructed of steel or aluminum, while the floor (or bed) is typically a metal or wood platform. Flatbed bodies designed for heavy and severe loads are often construction of 10-gauge steel, while aluminum frames and floors are typically selected for applications where operators need to maximize payload or where corrosion is a concern. Bodies with wood floors, by comparison, tend to be more cost-effective and are less time-consuming to repair.

    Flatbed Truck Body Options

While many flatbed bodies are basic, flat platforms, some options include short sidewalls, dropsides that can be raised or lowered as needed, or removable stakes on the bed’s perimeter to offer extra security and stability for the load. To protect drivers and crew in the cab, many flatbed bodies include a steel headache rack, which resides behind the cab. In the event of an accident, or if a load becomes unsecured, the headache rack prevents loads from coming through a truck’s rear window, as well as from damaging the cab and passengers within. Depending on the load in question, cargo might be kept in place by manually tying cargo down with ropes or ratchet straps. Flatbed truck bodies are typically fitted with heavy-duty rails to let operators secure loads with chains, ropes, or rachet tie-downs.
