About RV Haulers & Toter Trucks

Freightliner Business Class M2 106 Toter Truck

RV haulers and toter trucks are medium- and heavy-duty vehicles that are equipped with powerful engines and are used to haul heavy RVs across long distances. RV haulers are typically medium-duty trucks that have been converted for hauling recreational vehicles, although businesses can also use them to haul trailers or car carriers. RV haulers typically have some form of factory-installed or aftermarket steel or aluminum hauler body installed behind the cab. Toter trucks have a similar appearance to semitrucks but are specially equipped for towing mobile homes. They’re often equipped with a 2 5/16-inch (59-millimeter) ball hitch; some also have a fifth-wheel hitch for towing other vehicles, including pre-built and modular houses, boats, trailers, and other recreational vehicles.

    A Range Of Features

In addition to an automatic or manual transmission, RV haulers and toter trucks are commonly equipped with diesel engines and air ride suspensions, as well as 4x2, 4x4, and 6x4 drivetrains. Common RV hauler features include headache racks, multiple storage compartments, toolboxes, and auxiliary fuel tanks. Toter trucks typically include extended side mirrors to improve the operator’s visibility around wide loads such as mobile home sections that can measure up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) wide. Backup cameras, cruise control, and other driver assistance systems are also common in late-model RV haulers and toter trucks. Although some have day cabs, many are outfitted with sleeper cabs and even multi-person living spaces equipped with such amenities as a microwave, stove, sink, bathroom, television, and generator.
