About Winch & Oil Field Trucks

Winch trucks aren’t used exclusively for servicing oil field operations, but a winch and a tail roller are often the preferred tools for loading and unloading frac tanks, drilling equipment, pumps, pipes, and other heavy oil field equipment. Loading and unloading such heavyweight equipment, which in many cases has neither wheels nor treads, requires a very powerful winch, so you’ll want to pay special attention to the winch’s weight rating, as well as the truck bed’s front and rear axle weight capacities. Additionally, winch trucks are often equipped with gin poles that work with a truck’s winch to act as a smallish mobile crane and help with general lifting.

    Kenworth T800 Oil Field Truck

    Specifications

Oil field work can present challenges that most bed trucks don’t have to face, in the form of off-road terrain and the need to transport heavy equipment over uneven surfaces that are often soft and muddy. Oil field trucks will typically list the suspension type and wheel base to give you an idea of how well they might handle in rough conditions. In especially difficult terrain, twin-steer trucks and trucks with as many as three powered drive axles can be very useful.

Winch and oil field trucks are most often medium- and heavy-duty models with gross vehicle weight ratings (GVWRs) starting at just over 14,000 pounds (6,350 kilograms) and ranging up to—and well past—26,000 lbs (11,793 kg). Kenworth’s T800 trucks are popular candidates for winch and oil field duty. Kenworth calls the T800 “the ultimate workhorse” and equips it with the highest-horsepower engines in the manufacturer’s powerplant lineup. When combined with gross combination weights (GCWs) up to 330,000 lbs (149,685 kg) and options including high-capacity twin-steer front axles, front drive axles, pusher and tag axles, and more, it’s easy to see why oil field crews rely on these trucks that are equally at home on the road and off.
