Used Reefer Trailer Inventory Stable, But Prices Are Still Trending Downward
The newest Sandhills Global market reports covering semitrailers in Sandhills’ U.S. marketplaces show a shift in inventory from an upward trend to a steady trend, with inventory levels down 5.84% month over month and up 8.52% year over year in October. This includes dry van, reefer, flatbed, and drop-deck trailers.
Looking specifically at the reefer trailer market, Truck Paper Manager Scott Lubischer says, “Inventory continued to stabilize a bit, but prices are still trending downward. This month alone, we have witnessed retail values dropping a little over 4% while auction values took a bigger dip at 7% down.” Watch this month’s market minute video learn more.

“The bulk of reefer trailer inventory is still out in the west,” Lubischer says. “We’ve got $20.6 million worth of reefer trailer inventory in the western region. Looking at the asking price year over year, we’re down 26.7%, but we're starting to normalize from a little bit of an elevated price out there for retail values. We’re also seeing auction values about 30% down as well.”
“Those numbers are relatively close,” Lubischer says, “a lot closer than we typically see, so it seems the market is getting pretty competitive on the asking prices for reefer trailers and starting to normalize. You can see the inventory percentage has a relationship here. Year over year, we’re down about 15%, and in the last month, we’ve lost around 3% of that reefer inventory.”
Lubischer adds that reefer trailer inventory is currently at average levels, and, "Realistically speaking, the prices have averaged out as well. The average price today is $20,000, which might be just a little bit below average, but I certainly think we’re in a good spot overall.”
