North Carolina Building Supplier BMC Operates Fleet Of Kenworth T270s & T880s To Deliver Building Materials Across The United States
In two years, BMC of Raleigh, North Carolina, has purchased 150 Kenworth trucks, including 100 T880s and 50 T270s that it uses to deliver building supplies. The company’s roots stretch back to 1987, which is also the year it bought its first Kenworth trucks. It was based in Idaho at the time with one location, but now has a presence in 18 states.
The company’s T270 box trucks support gross vehicle weight ratings of up to 26,000 pounds (11,793 kilograms) and are used to deliver smaller, lighter-weight materials. Each of the T270s features a 300-horsepower (224-killowatt) PACCAR PX-7 engine and six-speed Allison automatic transmission.
Unique Kenworth T880 Specification
Each of BMC’s Kenworth T880s features a 455-hp (339-kW) PACCAR MX-13 engine and 12-speed automated transmission, but roughly half are configured as straight trucks for standard deliveries and the other half are coupled with aluminum flatbed trailers for fulfilling larger orders.
However, what makes the company’s most recent T880s unique is that instead of a step on the frame, BMC opted to add steps onto the diesel exhaust fluid tank. This move resulted in a 15-inch (38-centimeter) shorter wheelbase that improves the trucks’ maneuverability, allowing them to operate in urban environments. Going forward, all of its trucks will feature that spec.
“All of the bases are covered with our T880s,” says Alex Eadie, director of supply chain, fleet, logistics, and indirect spend at BMC. “Our straight trucks are especially useful when delivering to smaller projects or in the city where tights roads make deliveries difficult. We looked extensively at the T880’s turning radius when making the decision to make the T880 our truck of choice for these types of deliveries, and it’s proven to be the right recipe for us.”
Advanced Technologies
BMC’s drivers appreciate Kenworth’s dedication to adding advanced technologies to their trucks. Eadie says that operators of “older models” are often “taken aback” when they get into a newer model and see “all of the features on board,” but he adds that they quickly realize how those technologies can improve their overall job performance. “We like the innovation and high-performing trucks Kenworth offers us, and as we continue to grow our operation, Kenworth will be there with us,” Eadie says.
