In a live, virtual event hosted on YouTube on October 6, Hino Trucks USA laid out its plans to develop zero-emissions Class 4 to Class 8 vehicles as part of its recently announced Project Z, a collaborative effort with Hexagon Purus, Toyota, and Xos Trucks. Hino first embraced the sustainability concept in 1991 with the introduction of hybrid buses.

The goal of this new project is to develop demonstration models early in 2021, send demonstrators out to customers in 2022, and begin full production of zero-emissions vehicles before 2024. While the virtual event was a general overview, Hino says there will be more information to come in the near future.

    Vehicles On Display

The video, which you can view on Hino USA’s YouTube channel, features several vehicles, including a Class 5 Hino M5-based SEA Electric SEA-Drive 120a and a Class 7 truck powered by an all-electric drive system from Hexagon Purus. There were also two Class 8 Hino XL Series trucks highlighted, one with a Toyota Fuel Cell system and the other with an X-Pack battery and electric drive system from Xos. Hino says it will consider e-axles and central drive motors for its battery-electric vehicles during development. You can visit the official Project Z website (www.hino.com/projectz) to view the video and get more details.

    A “Holistic Approach”

“Our holistic approach to working with technology leaders like Toyota, Hexagon Purus, and Xos will result in a sustainable, low-cost product lineup that will meet the needs of our customers as our industry moves forward to zero-emission vehicles,” says Glenn Ellis, senior vice president of customer experience at Hino USA. “For customers ready to move in that direction now, the SEA Electric SEA-Drive 120a paired with a Hino M Series chassis is commercially available today.”

You will find thousands of new and used Hino trucks for sale on Truck Paper, including 155s, 195s, 258s, 268s, 338s, 300s, and 500s.
