Toyota Motor North America & Hino Trucks Jointly Developing Class 8 Fuel Cell Electric Truck
Hino’s XL Series chassis is expected to be the building block for an upcoming Class 8 FCET (fuel cell electric truck) powered by Toyota Motor North America’s fuel cell technology. The collaboration between Hino and Toyota expands an existing effort to develop a 25-ton FCET for the Japanese market, and the initial demonstration vehicle for project is expected to arrive in the first half of 2021. By developing a Class 8 FCET for the North American market, the two companies hope to contribute to the rapidly expanding interest in heavy-duty electric trucks.
Zero-Emission, Heavy-Duty Capability
“A fuel cell-powered version of the Hino XL Series is a win-win for both customers and the community,” says Tak Yokoo, senior executive engineer, Toyota Research and Development. “It will be quiet, smooth, and powerful, while emitting nothing but water. Toyota’s 20-plus years of fuel cell technology combined with Hino’s heavy-duty truck experience will create an innovative and capable product.”
Hino XL Series
Hino’s XL series currently consists of both XL7 and XL8 models; when powered by the Hino A09 Turbo Diesel engine, the trucks generate from 300 to 360 horsepower (224 to 268 kilowatts). There are no current details about the powertrain a Class 8 FCET Hino XL Series might offer, but Glenn Ellis, Hino’s senior vice president of customer experience, expects the development process should go quickly.
“Expanding upon our proud heritage of the Hino powertrain, Toyota fuel cell technology offers our customers a commercially viable, extended-range, zero-emissions vehicle in the near term,” Ellis says.
