Volvo Makes Fuel-Efficient D13TC Turbo Compound Engine Standard Equipment Across VNL Truck Line
Volvo Trucks North America’s latest-generation D13 Turbo Compound engine is now standard on all of the manufacturer’s VNL models. The fuel-saving D13TC motor uses turbo compounding and patented pistons with wave-shaped crowns to scavenge additional power that would ordinarily be lost as waste heat. This improves fuel efficiency, reduces emissions, and adds horsepower, including at low rpms. Volvo says the D13TC is best-suited to cruising speed applications such as tanker, bulk haul, and flatbed deliveries.
“By making the D13TC engine standard in our VNL product lineup, we’re taking fuel economy and optimized performance to the next level,” says Volvo Trucks North America’s Director of Product Marketing, Johan Agebrand. “Environmental care is one of Volvo Trucks’ core values, so we’re proud of the success we’re having to reduce the carbon dioxide footprint for fleet operators while lowering their operating costs.”
The Volvo D13TC Engine
The D13TC is a 13-liter, inline six-cylinder engine. It’s available with 405, 425, and 455 horsepower (302, 317, and 339 kilowatts) and 1,750 and 1,860 pounds-foot (2,373 and 2,522 newton-meters) of torque.
The D13TC uses a reliable, fixed-turbine design engineered to last as long as the engine—namely 1.2 million miles—without extra maintenance. Volvo says the motor uses up to 6% less fuel than the 2020 edition of the manufacturer’s D13VGT engine with a variable-geometry turbine. The D13TC’s Dynamic Torque feature adjusts its power according to the load while maintaining performance.
“The engineering advancements built into the new D13TC engine reflect Volvo Trucks’ commitment to leadership in sustainable transport solutions,” Agebrand says. “Customers trust our brand to not only prioritize energy conservation and reduce emissions, but also provide a power source that does not compromise on performance.”
The Volvo VNL
Volvo‘s VNL lineup includes VNL 300 day cabs and VNL 400, 740, 760, and 860 sleeper units. The VNL 760 is the best seller of the family, according to Volvo. VNL trucks are available with 4x2, 6x2, and 6x4 chassis configurations, including tag axles and Volvo’s Adaptive Loading pusher axle that automatically lifts under no-load or light-load conditions.
Engine options for the VNL—including the now-standard D13TC—range from 325 to 565 HP (242 to 421 kW). The truck line’s standard I-Shift intelligent automated manual transmission takes the grade of the road, vehicle speed and weight, and engine load into account to determine when to shift or hold a gear for maximum fuel economy. There are Severe Duty and Crawler Gears variations of the I-Shift available. Volvo’s I-See Predictive Cruise Control option adds topographical map data to help the transmission controller choose the right gear for the long haul.
The VNL’s Volvo Active Driver Assist (VADA) 2.0 collision mitigation system comprises automatic emergency braking, “slow and go” adaptive cruise control with auto resume, lane departure warning, a forward collision heads-up warning, and other automated safety technologies.
Volvo’s XCEED fuel efficiency package can improve the VNL 760’s and 860’s fuel economy by up to 16%. Its FlowBelow AeroKit aerodynamics package includes a system of wheel covers, ground effects, extended chassis fairings, and other features that reduce drag for greater fuel efficiency.
Another option, Volvo Dynamic Steering (VDS), reduces steering effort in both forward and reverse gear. Other options include LED headlamps and lighting, heated and ventilated seats, a Globetrotter cabin package (VNL 760 and 860), speed limit sign recognition, heated and ventilated seats, and many more.
