New Cummins PowerDrive 8000 Battery-Electric Drive System To Power Kalmar Terminal Tractors
Cummins’ new PowerDrive 8000 is a battery-electric power system designed for terminal tractors, also known as “yard spotter trucks” and “shunt trucks.” Terminal tractors are great candidates for electrification partly because they operate within distribution and port environments, never straying far from their recharging stations. This means that rechargers can be centralized in a relatively small area rather than spread along major highways.
Cummins will field test the new battery drive in Kalmar terminal tractors starting in early 2022. The two companies plan to offer the battery-electric yard spotters to distribution terminals around the world.
“Cummins is thrilled to work with Kalmar to bring a zero-emissions solution to the terminal tractor market,” says Cummins’ President of New Power, Amy Davis. “After decades of serving this market, we understand the requirements for this application and have specifically designed a solution to serve our customers better.”
The PowerDrive 8000
Cummins optimized the design of the PowerDrive 8000 expressly for the duty cycle and power needs of yard spotters. With up to 182 kWh of fast-charging battery power, the PowerDrive 8000 supports gross vehicle weights from 80,000 to 195,000 pounds (36,300 to 88,450 kilograms).
In September 2018, Cummins debuted a plug-in hybrid electric version of PowerDrive in a Kenworth T370 utility truck. That iteration of PowerDrive used an internal combustion engine, an electric motor, or a combination of both depending upon the requirements of the drive.
The Kalmar Ottawa T2E+
Kalmar Ottawa produces a variety of terminal tractors and yard trucks, including the Cummins-powered electric T2E+. Its compact batteries can be used in 24/7 operations thanks to the DC-fast charge System. The batteries are temperature-controlled through an Active Thermal Management System for reliable performance even in extreme cold.
The T2E+ uses a direct-drive motor instead of a transmission. It is available in several configurations with lifting capacities of up to 99 tons (90 metric tons) and lifting heights up of to 3.25 feet (990 millimeters).
“In line with our commitment to having a comprehensive electric product portfolio, we’re delighted to release our new Cummins-powered electric terminal tractor,” says Gina Lopez, Vice President Terminal Tractors, Kalmar. “We selected Cummins because of our long-standing cooperation in providing world-class drivetrain platforms, their global reach, and their proven electric solution suitable to meet our needs.”
