New Volvo VNR Electric Offers 83% Longer Range, New Configuration Options For Heavy-Duty Transport
Volvo Trucks has enhanced its VNR Electric with new battery technology and a new six-battery package, resulting in an operational range of 275 miles (442 kilometers), up from the 150-mi (241-km) range provided by its 264-kilowatt hour lithium-ion batteries. The new VNR Electric increases the all-electric truck’s energy storage to 565 kWh.
"Volvo Trucks is continuing to expand the capabilities of the VNR Electric to make it more efficient, satisfy our customer demands for expanded range, and provide a better driving experience,” says Andy Brown, Volvo Trucks’ product marketing manager for electromobility.
Better Batteries
The battery improvements are made possible through a combination of new battery technology, design enhancements, and better power management. Volvo says the enhancements result in up to a 40% increase in storage capacity per battery. To better maintain and manage battery temperature, the VNR Electric is equipped with a dedicated Battery Thermal Management System (BTMS). Volvo has also reduced the enhanced VNR Electric’s charging time; the new 250 kW charging capability delivers an 80% charge in 90 minutes (six-battery package) or 60 minutes (four-battery package).
New Configurations
Volvo’s enhanced VNR Electric is available as a 6x4 straight truck and a 6x4 tractor, in addition to the previous single-axle straight truck and 4x2 and 6x2 tractor configurations. The enhanced VNR Electric’s extended range makes it a fit for an even greater variety of local and regional distribution options.
