Supply chain solutions provider Martin Brower’s fleet got a little greener recently when the company acquired its first Volvo VNR Electric Class 8 truck. The zero-tailpipe emission truck will make food and beverage deliveries to McDonald’s restaurants located with a 95-mile (153-kilometer) range of its Montreal Distribution Centre facility near Baie-D'Urfé in Quebec. Martin Brower has worked with the fast food giant since the first McDonald’s opened in the United States in 1956. McDonald’s is trialing the VNR Electric to determine how alternative fuel vehicles might factor into servicing its more than 1,400 restaurants in Canada. Camions Volvo Montreal, recently named one of the first two Volvo Trucks Certified Electric Vehicle dealerships in Canada, will service the truck.
A Mission To Reduce Emissions
Martin Brower provides supply chain services for over 25,000 restaurants in 18 countries; about 40 of the 2,300 vehicles in its global fleet work in Montreal. The VNR Electric will make daily deliveries, helping the company evaluate how best to deploy more zero-emission trucks moving forward. The company is working with the Science Based Targets initiative to achieve significant carbon emissions reductions per ton by 2030, and the VNR Electric is key to its plan. McDonald’s, meanwhile, aims to achieve net-zero emissions across its worldwide operations by 2050.
“Our goal is to deliver innovative and meaningful solutions to help restaurants and our business create a more sustainable, ethical, and responsible future—every day, all over the world,” says Martin Brower Canada President Julie Dell’Aniello. “By integrating the Volvo VNR Electric tractor into our fleet, we will gain valuable experience for future zero-tailpipe emission tractor deployments that will enable us to continue driving down Martin Brower’s greenhouse gas emissions so we can meet our sustainability targets.”
The Volvo VNR Electric
The VNR Electric is designed for local and regional freight distribution applications. Volvo Trucks recently introduced new battery technology and an expanded six-battery, 565-kilowatt-hour package that boosts the truck’s operational range to up to 275 mi (442 km). In addition to 6x4 and 6x2 tractor options with the expanded six-battery system, the truck is available with an improved four-battery system in 4x2, 6x2, and 6x4 tractor and 4x2 and 6x2 straight truck configurations. The six-battery package can recharge to 80% in 90 minutes with a 250-kW charger, and the four-battery configuration in 60 minutes. The truck’s drivetrain is rated for 455 horsepower (335 kW) with up to 4,051 pounds-foot (5,492 newton-meters) of torque. The driveline includes Volvo’s two-speed I-Shift automated transmission.
