In some cases, lowboy trailers come equipped with mechanical scissor necks that fold down for more convenient loading of wheeled equipment.

Manufacturers commonly construct their lowboy trailers with steel beam frames and build hardwood planking into the deck for durability and lighter weight. Loading ramps and retractable outriggers are often provided for convenience and stability during loading and unloading, and flag holders and wide load sign brackets are common standard features to accommodate road safety regulations.
