    About Isuzu

Isuzu Commercial Truck of America is a subsidiary of Isuzu Motors Limited of Japan that manufactures Class 3 through Class 5 gas-powered and Class 4 through Class 7 diesel-powered trucks. The company’s popular N-Series and F-Series models feature a low-cab forward (LCF) design, which Isuzu says provides greater maneuverability, especially in urban settings. Isuzu says it has led the American market in sales of commercial LCF trucks every year since 1986. In 2019, while marking its 35th anniversary in the American market, Isuzu said it had delivered more than half a million trucks in North America, and held a 73% share of the LCF market for Class 3 through Class 5 vehicles. Isuzu entered the U.S. market in 1984 with an 87-horsepower (65-kilowatt) KS22 truck with a no-tilt cab.

    Isuzu Through The Years

Isuzu’s history stretches back to 1916, when Tokyo Ishikawajima Shipbuilding and Engineering Co., Ltd. and Tokyo Gas and Electric Industrial Co. began plans for automobile production. In 1919, Isuzu produced Japan’s first automobile, a Wolseley A9 car. The company produced its first air-cooled diesel engine in 1936. In 1959, Isuzu introduced the N-Series of trucks in Japan. It announced its F-Series of trucks in 1970. The first American-built gas-powered NPR truck rolled off the assembly line in 1994. By 2002, cumulative U.S. sales of Isuzu trucks had topped 275,000.

    N-Series Trucks

Isuzu produces N-Series trucks in Gas, Class 5 Gas, and Diesel lineups. Gas-powered models include the Class 3 NPR and Class 4 NPR-HD, both available in standard or crew cabs. They include 6.6-liter V8 engines rated for 350 horsepower (260 kilowatts) in wheelbases from 109 to 176 inches (2,768 to 4,470 millimeters). Diesel models include the Class 4 NPR-HD and NPR-XD and Class 5 NQR and NRR. They come in standard or crew cab varieties with wheelbases from 109 to 212 in. (5,385 mm), and a new four-wheel disc braking system and Standard Electronic Vehicle Stability Control system. The trucks include 5.2-liter turbocharged, intercooled four-cylinder engines rated for 215 HP (160 kW).

In 2021, Isuzu began producing Class 5 gas-powered NQR and NRR models with standard or crew cabs and 6.0-liter V8 engines rated for 311 HP (232 kW). Isuzu says the NRR is the industry’s first LCF truck with a 19,500-pound (8,845-kilogram) gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) to offer a gas option. Both models include a six-speed Allison 1000 RDS transmission with power take-off (PTO), marking the first time Isuzu has offered PTO in a gas-powered truck.

    F-Series Trucks

Isuzu’s F-Series lineup features Class 6 FTR and FVR Derated variants and the Class 7 FVR, Isuzu’s first F-Series Class 7 offering. All models come with a standard cab, and wheelbases range from 152 to 248 in. (3,860 to 6,299 mm). Customers can equip the trucks with air suspension and a 50- or 100-gallon (189- or 378-liter) fuel tank. The trucks feature a 6.7-liter six-cylinder Cummins B6.7 diesel engine rated for 260 HP (194 kW).

The latest generation of F-Series trucks is the first to include engines from the Isuzu Cummins Powertrain Partnership that Isuzu and Cummins formed in 2019. The companies have also announced plans to develop a prototype medium-duty, battery-electric truck based on an Isuzu F-Series truck and powered by a Cummins PowerDrive 6000 hybrid powertrain.
