    About Day Cab Trucks

Freightliner Cascadia 116 Day Cab Truck

Day cabs are over-the-road, short-haul trucks with a cabin that lacks space behind the seats for the bed(s) you’d find in a long-haul sleeper truck. They’re built for local and regional freight hauling and deliveries to destinations within a day's round-trip travel instead of overnight. Although cab and chassis trucks, flatbeds, dump trucks, and the like typically don’t have sleeper cabs either, day cabs are generally classified as semitrucks made to pull fifth-wheel semitrailers. The trucks may have cabover designs, popular in Europe and other parts of the world, or the conventional, long-hooded cabs preferred in the U.S. While recognizing that the use case for a semitractor will determine the decision to buy a day cab over a sleeper, it’s worth noting that day cabs are generally lighter in weight, less expensive, and more maneuverable in city traffic.

Day Cab Truck Weights & Configurations

Day cab trucks are mostly heavy-duty Class 7 and 8 tractors with a gross vehicle weight (GVW) of 26,001 pounds (11,790 kilograms) or more. However, a few single-axle, short-wheelbase models fall into the medium-duty Class 6 (19,501- to 26,000-lb; 8,845- to 11,790-kg) range, such as the Freightliner M2 106 Plus. Day cabs come in 4x2 configurations as well as 6x2 and 6x4 tandem models. They’re available with manual and automatic transmissions, automated manual gearboxes, and semi-automatic transmissions.

Find The Right Day Cab Truck

Popular models from the top manufacturers of new and used day cab trucks include the Freightliner Cascadia 125, International ProStar, Kenworth T800, Mack Pinnacle CXU613, Peterbilt 379 and 389, Volvo VNL64T300, and Western Star 4900.
