About Lowboy Semitrailers
As their name suggests, lowboy trailers are specialized flatbed trailers with decks that are extremely low to the ground to facilitate hauling loads that would be too tall to legally transport on a standard flatbed. These heavy haul trailers are manufactured by a number of companies and can transport loads of up to 80 tons (72.5 metric tons), making them a good fit for moving large pieces of farm equipment like combines and tractors, heavy construction equipment, and more.

Characteristics
Lowboy trailers are offered in a few different types; some have fixed necks, while some models feature detachable necks (either mechanical or hydraulic). The latter are sometimes called “removable goosenecks,” or “RGNs.” The benefit of an RGN is that, by detaching the front, the trailer can be lowered to the ground for front or rear loading. In some cases, lowboy trailers come equipped with mechanical scissor necks that fold down for more convenient loading of wheeled equipment.
Manufacturers commonly construct their lowboy trailers with steel beam frames and build hardwood planking into the deck for durability and lighter weight. Loading ramps and retractable outriggers are often provided for convenience and stability during loading and unloading, and flag holders and wide load sign brackets are common standard features to accommodate road safety regulations.
